Stress is something that we all experience at one point or another, whether it is in our personal or professional lives. Most of the time it is manageable and can actually be beneficial. It is generally a physical response. The body feels stressed when it perceives danger, releasing a cocktail of hormones which ready us for freeze, flight or fight. Sometimes this response is appropriate, like a quick reaction if somebody runs out in front of us when we’re driving. Our personal response to stress is subjective; what may be motivational for one person might be stressful for another. This is not a sign of weakness. Situations which induce stressful feelings are many and varied, but often include:
- Big changes at home or work
- Too many stressful events occurring at the same time
- High pressure environments
- Constant worrying
- Overwhelming responsibility
- Not feeling in control of situations
- Relationship difficulties
- Retirement or losing your job
- Being a carer for someone who needs a lot of support
The difficulty comes either when our body goes into a state of stress in inappropriate situations, or when we are dealing with too many stressors at once. When the blood flows to the most important muscles needed to fight or flee, brain function is reduced leading to an inability to think straight, which can affect our work and home lives. If we are kept in a state of stress for extended periods, the increased amount of cortisol streaming through our body can be detrimental to our health.
This is why people need to seek help to cope with feelings of stress. As it is not the situation itself that causes stress, but our reaction to it, hypnotherapy can help you to address the stress you are feeling. Hypnotherapy allows you to discover the root of the problem, whether it is a current situation or a response to an experience in the past, and I can work with you to set a new course towards achieving the goals you want and regain positive health without the stressful feelings holding you back.
