Hypnotherapy and children

Hypnotherapy is an amazing tool to use with children and teenagers. They are already tuned in to using their imagination and can engage in visualisation quite naturally. In fact, children often enter into states of hypnosis every day when engrossed in play or just lost in their thoughts.

I was a teacher, assistant head teacher and Special Educational Needs leader for many years and have worked with children who have experienced trauma and personal difficulties. In this role, I use my experience with children to offer hypnotherapy to those who are ready and willing to make changes. I offer hypnotherapy to children from the age of 6. I have a current Disclosure and Barring Service certificate (previously known as CRB).

As with any clinical hypnotherapy, there are many children’s issues that can be treated using gentle, child-centred techniques. These include:

  • Bed wetting;
  • Fears and phobias;
  • Anxiety;
  • Exam stress;
  • Hair pulling;
  • Nightmares;
  • Nerves and nervous behaviour;
  • Confidence;
  • Self-esteem.

There are a variety of techniques which can be successful with children, depending on their age, maturity and the issue being treated. Whilst many children are open to discussing their worries in a safe environment such as this,  some may find themselves upset or embarrassed by the issue they face. By using an approach which is right for the individual, I can help the child to release difficult emotions and explore their feelings and wishes, without the need to explain them at all.
